Preheat oven to 450°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

In a large bowl, whisk together all-purpose flour, baking powder, granulated sugar, and salt until evenly incorporated.

Add cold, cubed unsalted butter to the flour mixture. Use a pastry cutter or fingertips to blend until the mixture forms coarse, pea-sized crumbs.

Create a well in the center of the mixture and pour in cold buttermilk. Gently stir until the dough just begins to form—do not overmix.

Turn dough onto a lightly floured surface. Knead very gently 5–6 times to bring the dough together.

Roll dough to approximately 1-inch thickness. Cut into circles using a biscuit cutter and arrange closely on the prepared baking sheet.

If desired, brush biscuit tops with beaten egg. Bake for 12–15 minutes until golden brown and flaky.
